  17. <p>     Spinach: Popeye the sailor man wouldn't leave home without
  18. it. But a can of roughage wasn't much use to the muscle-bound
  19. mariner last week against a foe more powerful than Bluto--a
  20. skittish distributor. "I was trying to do a comic strip where
  21. Popeye and Olive Oyl cope with the problems of the modern
  22. world," says Bobby London, writer and illustrator of the daily
  23. Popeye strip for the past six years. When London drew two
  24. comical clergymen who mistakenly believed Popeye's anorexic
  25. amour was contemplating an abortion, the King Features Syndicate
  26. was popeyed. It dropped two weeks' worth of Popeye panels--and
  27. London. The reaction brings to mind another Popeye associate:
  28. Wimpy.
